Funding of £100,000 has been awarded by Natural England on behalf of the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Fund to two projects in the Huddersfield area. The ALSF is a tax paid by all quarry operators on their aggregate sales of £1.60 per tonne. £50,000 has been awarded to improve public access to Honley Woods, a popular recreational area, which is owned by Johnsons Wellfield Quarries. Works will cost in the region of £75,000, the remaining £25,000 will be donated by Kirklees. Works will include improvements to boundaries, footpaths, dry stone walls and new signage. Volunteers from the BTCV conservation group will be carrying out the works and local people are being encouraged to get involved. BTCV will also be running educational sessions involving local school children. The other £50,000 has been awarded for restoration works to the medieval style gates which were once the main focal point and entrance to Beaumont Park. This project was successful in obtaining this award as it is within three miles of a quarry (Johnsons Wellfield Quarries at Crosland Hill).
