Sheffield's city centre public space 'Gold Route' has won Public Realm of the Year at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) White Rose Awards for Design Excellence. |
A major development, the Gold Route creates a clear pedestrian route through the city of Sheffield, linking the station, retail areas, business quarter and university campus. Visitors to the city now arrive at an attractive and imaginatively designed forecourt, complete with impressive water feature. The Gold Route is a flamboyant and creatively designed scheme. Each of the spaces has its own character, but all make full use throughout of stone, metal, water and lighting. The scheme leads the pedestrian onwards and highlights buildings of interest. Quirky and eyecatching features include a giant basin with plughole. Other areas of this outstanding scheme are more formal, with Peace Square providing a traditional city space. Pedestrian routes and soft landscape make this an attractive part of the public realm, and bronze fountains maintain the theme followed by the other areas of the Gold Route. The Gold Route includes public spaces at Howard Street, Millennium Square and Barkers Pool. Work on Howard Street has transformed it into a high quality, attractive route between Sheffield Station and the heart of the city centre. Part of a £50 million plus investment programme into Sheffield Station and its surroundings, the water feature symbolises Sheffield's industrial heritage, representing hot metal pouring from a furnace.

M illennium Square acts as a direct link between two of Sheffield's most popular public spaces, the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden. Set in the paving are dozens of LED lights giving the space a sparkle at night. In addition nine large Sheffield stainless steel spheres varying in sizes up to 2m in diameter are located throughout the space. This is a popular, imaginative and welcoming scheme which highlights the heart of the city. Its strong cohesive design brings together different areas of the city and creates an attractive and innovative streetscape.
