Overall Winner of the Pedestrian Environment Award in the Local Government News (LGN) Street Design Awards 1999 and Winner of the Best street Landscape Award in the Stone Federation Great Britain – Natural Stone Awards 2000. |
This award winning scheme involved the transformation of the centre of Sheffield by creating three new squares - The Peace Gardens, Town Hall Square and Hallam Square.
The whole emphasis of the scheme was on the use of high quality natural materials. Over 7,000 square metres of Johnson's shot sawn Hard York stone paving was specified for use on all sections of the project, taking advantage of it's proven durability, aesthetic appeal and excellent slip resistant properties.
The stone was effectively combined with roughly split granite setts in various colours, and silver grey Alantejo granite kerbs from Portugal, giving added prestige. This highly acclaimed project amply illustrates the harmonious use of natural stone and how careful material specification and design can provide an environment which is both classy and functional, befitting of an extensive public space in the heart of a principal UK City.
